What is the largest loan I can get from a bank with low credit?

I'm 20 years old and I have 2 small loans out at 2 loan companies because I was told they help build credit...well I was just told today that they don't help they actually make you look worse and the best thing to do is get a personal loan from a bank. How much would I be able to get and would I have to have a co signer?
